The Issue

India has been grappling with the issue of street and homeless children and the ones living in slums since ages. Often, these children are deprived of fundamental rights and are vulnerable to all types of abuse as well. Relentless, continued and coordinated efforts of the Government agencies, NGOs, Corporate, and individuals is essential to help these children.

Upliftment of vulnerable communities, delivery of educational resources in rural areas, empowerment of rural women, and rural health and hygiene issues have also emerged as matters that need attention.

Need Base India from its humble beginnings of rescuing 10 vulnerable children in 2009, has now evolved into an organisation to establish a system to ensure safety, sustainability and support to the underprivileged children. We not only rescue the needy children, but continue to support them till they empower themselves to stand on their own feet. This not only enables them to become responsible citizens but also support their families.

In due course of time Need Base India has also evolved to support various issues important to the society, other than Child Care Homes. Our program includes Education Programs in Govt. Schools, Community Development Programs, Young Adult support program, Skill Development, Bridge Center for Children with Disabilities, Public Safety, and Revitalizing the environment.

All these programs are run in collaboration with our sponsoring partners as well as other NGOs.

Mission

To empower vulnerable children, youth, and women through holistic education, skill development, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities; to foster resilient and inclusive communities; and to promote environmental responsibility and social equity, enabling individuals and societies to thrive sustainably.

Many aspire to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable children, but few possess the dedication to turn that aspiration into reality. Mr. Rahim Shaik, the visionary founder of Need Base India, is one such individual driven by a profound commitment to transforming the lives of underprivileged children.

Born and raised in Raichur, Mr Rahim Shaik often saw young children left to fend for themselves near railway stations and crossings. Either the parents were inadequate, or the conditions were adverse, making them beg on the streets or work as laborers. Opting out of conventional corporate roles, he embarked on a journey of service, initially joining a local NGO dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating runaway children in Raichur.

The Genesis

Over a decade of dedicated service with the NGO broadened Mr. Rahim Shaik’s understanding of the challenges faced by street children. He realized that simply reuniting them with their families wasn’t always a viable solution, as many lacked adequate parental care or faced unsuitable home environments.

Driven by a deep-rooted resolve to address these systemic issues, Mr. Rahim Shaik founded Need Base India (NBI) in December 2009, headquartered in Bangalore, Karnataka. NBI focuses on holistic child development, encompassing care, protection, education, health, and life skills for children across its shelters. The organization’s mission is to empower children to become positive contributors to society.

In December 2011, NBI established its inaugural residential home for girls, the ‘Rainbow Home,’ in Bengaluru. Today, NBI operates nine residential care homes in Bangalore and extends its impact to 16 villages in Koppal and four villages in Raichur, among Karnataka’s most impoverished districts.
